Sometimes when I talk to potential online store owners.  they ask me about free website options on the internet.   No question about it free website off the ability of get your message out quickly and cheaply but there are some huge disadvantages in doing this.   Even though the website it free.  The cost may be your reputation.

Reliability

With some free websites or affiliate sites, there isn’t an obligation on the host to back up your website’s data.  After putting in a lot work creating your website,  you wouldn’t want to all that work to disappear over night.

Search Engine Optimization

Most free websites offer little or no search engine optimization.   Additionally most free websites providers offer only basic traffic statistics and no access to tools like Google Analytics.  If you are just looking to create a website for personal interest and have no interest in showing up in search engines,  then a free website will be ideal for you.  But if you are a site owner , you want all of the ability to add your own keywords and descriptions in multiple pages on your site for you to be noticed on search engine sites such as Google, Bing and Yahoo.

Using your site to Promote Someone Else

Free websites can cover your site in other people’s ads.  Some promote their own free website design tools and others sell your website as contextual ad space to the highest bidder.  Either way you have little or no control over what is show on your page.

URL’s

Many free websites only give customers the option of using free website’s hosting name for their website.  For example: www(dot)dumbwebsite(dot)com/freewebsite.   Any content that you have added to your site is not being credited to you but to the hosting company.   If you are the one doing the work, shouldn’t you be getting the credit?

At best your free webs tie is telling the world how free and unprofessional your website is.  At worse,  your competition will use it to their advantage and it could affect your business.  Spending a minimum investment of less than $20.00 per month with Build the Store will prevent  and will help you in having a successful website.

    • Hi,
I’ve been able to subscribe using Feedburner. I’ve also been able to include the blog into my rss feed via inclusion of the blog.buildthestore.com/feed url. Depending on your rss reader/feed you may need to include the full url (above) I’ve had that happen a couple of times!
